The President

Professor Victor Chukwuma Wakwe, FMCPath, PNMC, was born in Abonema, Rivers State on 27th April, 1949. He is a native of Aboh Kingdom in Delta State.

He attended St. Patrick’s College, Calabar from 1962 to 1966 and College of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt for his GCE Advanced Level (1974)


Professor Wakwe was admitted into the College of Medicine, University of Lagos where he obtained an intercalated Bsc. (Hons) degree in Biochemistry in 1977 and MBBS degree in 1980. He started his Residency training programme in Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in 1982. In 1986 he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Nutrition and Dietetics from the Gandhigram Institute of Rural Health and Family Welfare Trust, Ambathurai, India. He became a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College in the Faculty of Pathology in 1988 and a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (Laboratory Medicine) in 1994. In 1989 he had an MPhil. of the University of Lagos.


Professor Wakwe was appointed Lecturer 1 in the Department of Chemical Pathology, University of Port Harcourt and a Consultant to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in 1988. He rose to the rank of Professor of Chemical Pathology in 2003. He held the positions of Acting Head of Department of Anatomical Pathology (1989-1990), and also Chemical Pathology (1989-1991) and (1992-1995). He was also Head of the Teaching Hospital Department of Chemical Pathology up to1995 and from 1998 to 2003. He became the Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences of Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, January to June 2006. He returned to the University of Port Harcourt after his sabbatical Leave.


Professor Wakwe won some scholarships and attended scientific conferences both within and outside the country. He is a member of many national and international bodies and has been external examiner to most major medical schools in Nigeria.


He was Chairman of the Faculty of Pathology of the National Postgraduate Medical College for two terms (2002-2005), College Treasurer for two terms (2006-2009) and Vice-President of the College for a single two-year term (2010-2011). On Friday 2nd December, 2011, he was elected as the College President by the Governing Board of the College for a single two-year term.
