The Faculty of Public Health was established as one of
the 13 pioneer Faculties of the National Postgraduate
Medical College of Nigeria by Decree 67 Promulgated by
the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1979. By this
Decree, The faculty was given the responsibility for
the setting and monitoring of globally acceptable
standards in the education and the training of
physicians in Public Health in Nigeria and conducting
professional postgraduate examination in Public Health.
Philosophy
The fellowship Training Programme of the Faculty
seeks to train specialists in Public Health who will
practice as consultant Public Health Physicians at
the various levels of health care delivery system in
the Country.
STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME
The training in Public Health takes a minimum period of
4 years after full registration as a physician. The
examinations for Fellowship in Public Health of the
College are in 3 parts: Primary, Part I and Part II.
The Primary Examination is in the Basic Sciences,
which are relevant to Public Health and includes the
following subjects:Microbiology, Pharmacology,
Genetics, Demography, Human Ecology, Medical Statistics
and Principles of Epidemiology. The Primary Examination
could be regarded as a qualifying examination for the
selection of suitable candidates for the training
programme.
The Part I Examination is taken at least 2 years
after the Primary Examinations and this follows a
period of residency training in an accredited training
institution. The examination tests the trainees'
knowledge in all the disciplines of Public health, and
also seeks to access the clinical and the professional
expertise of the trainees in relevant areas.
Success in Part I examination qualifies the trainees to
be appointed Senior Registrars in appropriate
institutions.
The Part II examination is taken at least 2 years
after the Part I examination and seeks to assess the
ability of the trainees in problem solving as well as
their competence to carry out specific duties expected
of consultants in Public Health. It also assesses the
trainees' ability to carry out relevant research
studies in specific areas of public health. This
examination takes the form of an oral examination on
the Principles and Practice of Public Health, and oral
defence of a dissertation submitted on a relevant
specialty area of Public Health.
