The National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria
was established by Decree No 67 of 24th September 1979
with the responsibility of accreditation of training
institutions for the professional postgraduate
training of doctors and dentists, organization of
training programmes and curricula including the
conduct of review courses for training, conduct of
professional postgraduate examination of candidates in
different faculties including the Faculty of
Paediatrics. Programme Philosophy: The residency
programme for the Fellowship of the Medical College in
Paediatrics seeks to train qualified doctors to
develop specialist skills in the care of children
comprising competence in the different phases of
normality / growth in childhood, and childhood
disorders.
The emphasis is on the changing / emerging patterns
of childcare including the development of new
interventions and emphasis is placed on Primary Health Care.
Admission Requirements:
Admission is open to any Medical Practitioner with
basic medical degrees registrable with the Medical and
Dental Council of Nigeria. A certificate of
completion of, or exemption from NYSC is required.
General Educational Objectives:
At the end of the Residency training, each Resident
should be able to:
@Obtain and record at first consultation a complete
data base as is appropriate for the urgency and
complexity of the patients problem.
@Identify problems that require further investigations
I therapeutic intervention.
@Investigate clinical problems using relevant tests
and other appropriate rules.
@Interpret clinical findings and the results of
diagnostic investigations to reach appropriate
decisions of clinical management and therapeutic
intervention.
@Demonstrate a clear knowledge of the pathology,
pathophysiology, clinical management options and
results of therapy of common childhood diseases.
@Provide effective supervision for junior professional
colleagues.
@Teach concepts in Paediatrics to the junior colleagues
@Provide effective and purposeful leadership in the
health team.
@Be aware of current controversies in Paediatrics as
well as the merits and demerits of each one.
Membership of the Faculty:
All Fellows of the faculty are members. There are
currently 239 members of the faculty. There is a
yearly ALL FELLOWS meeting usually in the first month
of the year at the annual Peadiatric Association of
Nigeria Conference (PANCONF).
Faculty Board of Paediatrics:
The Faculty Board of Paediatrics is made up of 16
members with a Chairman, Secretary, Chief Examiner and
a Treasurer. The Faculty board meeting takes place
twice a year in May and November to consider matters
relating to the affairs of the faculty.
Members are
Quorum at meetings shall be a third of the membership
examinations.

Intensive Revision Course:
The faculty organizes an Intensive Revision course in
the early part of the year for prospective candidates
sitting for the Primary, and Part I examinations.
At the part II level, courses are organized on
Research Methodology and Management in Medical
Practice.
Examinations / Examiners:
The Faculty of Paediatrics examinations are in three
parts:
Primary, Part I and Part ll. Examinations are
conducted twice in a year March/May and
September/November.
Examiners must be fellows of the faculty who are at
least five years standing.
There is a Court of Examiners made up of 5 members who
organizes, conducts and supervises the examinations
of the faculty.
Primary Examination:
The objective of the primary examination is to test
the basic science knowledge of the trainee as is
relevant to Paediatrics. This segment of the
fellowship examinations is conducted through multiple
choice questions (MCQ).
Part I Examination:
This comes up at the end of two years of professional
training (Junior Residency), to test the cognitive
knowledge and basic professional skills in
Paediatrics. The candidates are tested using MCQ.
Essay type questions and Clinical examinations
(Clinicals. Practicals and Orals).
Part II Final Examination:
This comes up two years of professional training
(Senior Residency) with considerable responsibility
for professional judgment and problem solving. It
prepares the candidate for leadership in Paediatrics.
Candidates prepare and present a dissertation on a
topic of his choice in the field of Paediatrics, and
is examined on General Paediatrics.
Candidates who pass at this level are eligible for
appointment as Consultant Paediatricians.
Candidates applying for the Parts I and II
examinations must be registered as Associate Fellows
of the College through their training institutions.
Completed Certificate of Training signed by the
respective head of the training institution are
required before eligibility for these parts of the
Faculty Day Lectures:
The Faculty organizes an annual lecture on topical
issues in Paediatric practice.
The lecture is delivered by a Distinguished
Paediatrician who has contributed immensely
elected at the All Fellows meeting and tenure of
office is for two years with only one additional term.

Professor Adeoye Adeniyi Prize:
This is an annual prize that is awarded to the
candidate with the adjudged best dissertation for the
year under consideration. Such candidate must pass
both parts of the Part II final examinations at a
sitting to be eligible.
