OVARIAN TUMOURS IN JOS: A TEN YEAR RETROSPECTIVE HISTOPATHOLOGICAL STUDY (JAN. 1997 – DEC. 2006)
Abstract
This study is a ten year review of histopathological pattern of ovarian
tumours seen at Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) between
January 1997 and December 2006.
In all, 410 ovarian tumours were seen which represent 86.3% of all
(475) ovarian surgical specimens and 1.7% of all (27,580) surgical
specimens received during the study period.

Out of the 410 ovarian tumours, 305 (74.4%) were benign. The peak
age at occurrence of benign tumours is between the second and third
decades of life. Benign cystic teratoma is the commonest histological
type of benign ovarian tumours constituting 95 (31.1%) while struma
ovarii is the least common constituting 1 (0.3%).
Malignant ovarian tumours constitute 88(21.5%) of all ovarian tumours
with peak age at occurrence between the fourth and fifth decades of life.
Mucinous cyst adenocarcinoma is the commonest malignant ovarian
tumour constituting 32 (36.45%) of all malignant ovarian tumours while
Choriocarcinoma and metastatic cancers are the least common 1 (1.1%)
respectively.
